Haaland Over Our Very Own England Captain!

Erling Haaland is expected to sign for Manchester City very soon and the 21-year-old will arrive at the Etihad for a reported fee of £63 million. Pep Guardiola’s side has yet another world-class attacker at their disposal and their impossibly-rich owners have another marquee signing for the impressive portfolio.

Whilst I don’t doubt the Norwegian's quality and huge potential, I have to say I’m deeply upset that City chose not to opt for another proven goalscorer - Harry Kane - a striker whose team completed the double over City this season and regularly gets a result against them in both domestic and European competition.

LORD PING: FOR OPINIONATED PLAYERS

Haaland Over Kane Is Preposterous

I see no reason why Haaland was chosen over the England captain. Yes, Haaland may be younger, but he simply lacks the leadership quality and international status possessed by Kane. He’s never played in a European final or World Cup semi-final and is not as creative a player as our Harry.

In Harry Kane, Manchester City have a proven, world-class attacker who is ready to play straight out of the box. He’s already scored almost 180 Premier League goals in addition to winning three Golden Boots (level with Alan Shearer) and picked up the Playmaker of the Season trophy last year - the first striker to do so and the first player to register the most goals and most assists in a season. He also knows the Premier League like the back of his hand and has spent the majority of his career trying to win it with Spurs.

City’s Problems Are In Europe

Manchester City, of course, did try to sign the Tottenham striker last summer but fell short of Daniel Levy’s asking price of £150 million. City’s lack of an out-and-out striker caused some to wonder where the goals will come from, though their outstanding domestic season has caused us all to have egg on our faces.

However, City’s problems do not lie in the Premier League and instead lie in the pantheon of European football. The club, unable to win the competition so far, has yet to announce itself on the biggest stage by lifting the Champions League trophy. Much like Paris Saint Germain, Manchester City has developed a reputation as a footballing force at home and a farce abroad.

The introduction of Harry Kane would certainly remedy this issue and would fire City to the summit of European football. I think it’s a joke that Kane has been allowed to fall by the wayside and go yet another season without hoovering up the trophies he so richly deserves.

Signing Kane Would Have Benefited England

Kane is quite simply too good to languish in the Europa Conference League with Spurs. As our national captain, he needs to be competing for the sport’s biggest trophies and playing in the elite competitions. Can you imagine the prospect of him retiring with no trophies to his name? Alan Shearer didn’t win a lot, he at least has a Premier League winner’s medal to his name. The same can’t be said for Kane - Shearer’s heir apparent as the league’s top marksman and national icon.

Erling Haaland will certainly be an asset to the Premier League for years to come, but how City have bypassed the sensational Harry Kane is something I just can’t get my head around.

He’s arguably the best striker of this generation and is, as far as I’m concerned, behind only Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski in world football. Signing him would not only be great for the league, but it would also help the England national team as its captain would regularly be playing at the very highest level.

Welcome to the Premier League, Erling Haaland. I’m sure you’ll enjoy your stay, but just know that you’ll always be second best to the England captain in my eyes.
